Repossessed Auto Auctions – Read Before You Bid

June 29th, 2011 Gary No comments

So it is really within your reach if you have been dreaming of driving home a BMW 3 Series. Here are some quick tips that you can pick up if you are not sure how a repossessed auto auction works.

Introduction – What Exactly Is a Repossessed/Seized Vehicle

Repossessed property also includes vehicles. These are all seized, surplus and unclaimed equities which the government agencies try to sell away to recover administrative costs. The auctioned cars can also come from banks, financial lenders, police and other government agencies.

Types Of Vehicles Put On Auction

You can practically find all kinds of vehicles put up for sale at the repossessed auto auctions. From SUVs, to sedans and sports convertibles, you get a whole range of vehicles. The condition of these vehicles may vary from slightly scratched to being badly damaged. But the good thing is the majority are in excellent working condition. Sometimes, you may even find cars which are a few months old priced at less than 60% of its normal retail price.

Prices of Vehicles

These vehicles start with very low prices and are bid upwards by interested parties. If the car model is a hot favorite, then it can skyrocket to ridiculous prices. That said, most people are still able to drive home a set of wheels for 80% off the showroom price. Such seized or repossessed vehicles are better deals than buying from private car dealers.

Basic Rules and Requirements

There are general rules and requirements to abide by. Firstly, most require bidders to be at least 18 years old and hold a driving license. Some require you to pay a registration fee to enter and bid. Ideally, you should carry a copy of Kelly Blue Book when you enter these places as it would help you to know the estimated value of the cars. Bring along a qualified auto mechanic as well so that he can provide a preliminary inspection.

Repossessed Auto Auctions Venues

Such auctions happen all the time and at all places throughout the year so you should be able to find one near home. For a start, call up the local government agencies branches and banks or even auction houses for a schedule. Check out the local newspapers for advertisements for auctions also.

The most convenient way of finding such car auctions is to use online auction directories. From there, you would be able to know exactly when and where the auctions are taking place. On top of that, you would know what vehicles are being offered. For a low one-time fee, you can have unlimited access to their databases of the latest news about repossessed auto auctions at your finger tips.

Saving Money With Repossessed Cars

June 23rd, 2011 Gary No comments

Just like any other purchase, buying a repossessed car come with consequences if not done right. Although buying a repossessed car saves you money, if you don’t do it properly you can get ripped off. An easy way to avoid this situation is to buy from the bank where the workers are trustworthy. Hiring a local mechanic to check the car out before you make the sale can prevent further problems, too.

The first image that many people get in their heads when they hear the term ‘repossessed cars’ is that the cars are somehow junky and not worth keeping up the payments and so they got repossessed. This could be true some of the time but many times brand new cars also get repossessed. Things happen in people’s lives that change their financial situations. This causes some people to no longer be able to afford the cars they have. And some of these cars are extremely low mileage cars, and excellent deals.

Any car that is sold is depreciated by 20% as soon as it leaves the lot. Banks often times sell repossessed cars cheap because they don’t really lose money. The previous owner of the car must pay the difference, therefore the bank will make a sacrifice if need be. Although banks aren’t afraid to sell at a low price, they still try making as much money as possible.

Banks and credit unions are the best place to find a repossessed car to buy. Dealerships rarely sell their repossessed cars as low as these other places. Auctions are full of repossessed cars because banks and credit unions are looking to sell their cars quickly, and auctioneers specialize in these sorts of things.

If you want to take a stab at buying repossessed cars, then locate your local lending institutions and inquire about how they dispose of their cars. You can also keep an eye out in your local newspaper for any upcoming auctions. And in today’s world you can really find tons of information on repossessed cars online. There are many sites that are just loaded with information that will be useful in finding some repossessed cars and auctions.

Used car auctions go on all the time all around the country. Repossessed cars circulate quickly as people find that getting deals makes it easier in coping with today’s money crunched economy. So before you lay out your hard earned money for any repossessed cars, you need to do a little homework, have it checked out and be sure of just what it is you’re buying. You may find the deal of a lifetime. It just takes doing the legwork.

Don’t Make These Mistakes When Buying Repossessed Cars

June 9th, 2011 Gary No comments

Buying repossessed cars is a great way to take advantage of the current economic climate. With repossessions on the increase there is an ever-growing number of good used cars available and these cars are usually sold to the highest bidder at car repo auctions. You can achieve great value at these auctions, with bidding often starting as low as 0, but there are some foolish people out there that don’t get the kind of savings that you can make if you avoid some common mistakes. Since you are doing some research I know you are smarter than some, but I am going to provide the information you need to ensure that you are well prepared for the process of buying repossessed cars and that you get a quality vehicle at the lowest possible price.

Some people wait until they are desperate for a new car and rush along to an auction with shiny object syndrome and the pressure of having to walk away with a vehicle, any vehicle. These people will never get the best savings. Why? They haven’t done any research. You can get a list of repossessed cars for sale at the auction prior to auction day. With this list in hand you can check out the history of the vehicles you are interested in and also the current market value. By doing this you can discount any vehicles that have a problematic past and also decide in advance what your top bid will be for the vehicle in accordance with the prevailing market value. I always advise that you set this limit below the market value to ensure you are getting a real bargain.

While attending any car auction, the cars available are normally on what you see is what you get basis. However one advantage of repo cars is that they are normally well maintained by the original owner right up until the repossession. Also given the sudden impact of the recession we are in, you will find a great number of late models available. Some people get distracted by the shiny new car they want and don’t take advantage of the opportunity to inspect the vehicle before the auction. You should always take some time during the auction’s inspection period to go over any vehicles you are interested in buying. Start off with a visual inspection for signs of any damage to the body of the car and then start the engine and listen to the sound of it for any unusual noises. I would also advise you to check the electrics are working and to dip the oil and transmission fluids. By doing this you will have confidence that you are bidding on a good used car and you will avoid the headaches of repair bills in the future. Be sensible about your criteria at this point. I will definitely disregard a vehicle if I suspected an engine fault but if it had a few scratches on the body work, I will bear in mind that value of the saving I could make on the car and make a judgment based on that.

Now auction novices, who are buying repossessed cars, will often be bidding against experienced car dealers who are attending the auction to find stock for their car lot. Don’t let that put you off though. If you have researched the market value, the car history and completed your inspection, you are ready to start bidding with the best of them. The only thing you really need to ensure at this stage is that you are in control of your bidding. Don’t behave like an amateur and get caught up in the excitement of the bidding or become so attached to one particular repo car that your budget multiplies in your mind. Stick to the limits you decided on before the auction begins.

Those who decide they are going to buy at the only auction they know about are more likely to lose control, as the auction day comes to an end. There are auctions taking place on a regular basis and if you have decided on a particular model that you want or if bids are going above your budget, you can relax in the knowledge that you just attend the next auction. Check out your local newspapers or save yourself some time by investing a few dollars in an online service that will give you comprehensive auction listings.

So in short, if you do some research in advance of the auction, inspect the vehicles you are interested in, stick to your guns and stay in control during the bidding and are prepared to wait for another opportunity, you can be the one bragging about the ridiculously low price you paid for your car. You might on the other hand want to keep that to yourself and let people think you paid a fortune for that amazing car in your driveway. Buying repossessed cars represents a great buying opportunity for the smartest buyers. Be smart and get great value!
